Language Skills Spoken language provides the foundation for reading and so it is essential to consider the relationship between reading and language skills in order to understand why children show the poor comprehender profile.

It follows that a possible cause of reading comprehension difficulty is a working memory problem. A variety of tasks have been used to investigate the working memory skills of poor comprehenders. In one classic working memory task ­(listening span) a child hears a series of short sentences and is asked to decide if each one is true or false. At the same time, the child is required to remember the final word from each sentence and, after a sequence of sentences have been presented, to recall these final words in order.
